ABOUT HEARDS

The HEARD family have been operating in business and living in Papakura for over 100 years across four generations.

It started with our great grandfather – George Heard who operated a delivery service with Clydesdale horses and carts.

Our grandfather – Max Heard owned and operated a cartage business with trucks and also operated in Papakura.

The next two generations have been working side by side for over 25 years. Karen joined her parents, Des and Trish at the age of 17 after completing a Diploma in Management at MIT. Rob joined the team in 1993 after finishing a Bachelor of Commerce degree at Auckland University.

Des and Trish started their business based at King Edward Avenue, Papakura in 1967. Des owned and operated truck and trailers delivering general cartage as well as operating a builders supply yard from their premises.

In 1977, expansion meant they then outgrew the property at King Edward Avenue and the operation was shifted to 75 Boundary Road, Papakura – where we still currently operate from today. Primarily operating as an earthmoving business, overtime the focus shifted to providing landscape products.

Des designed and built the bark granulating machines and later the screening plants that we use to produce screened topsoil and our own compost and garden mixes. In 2003, Des and Trish obtained resource consent to set up a green waste disposal tip for public use and a tub grinder was purchased from the United States for the purpose of mulching green waste into garden mulch and compost.

Further expansion in 2006 led to more change with the introduction of skip bins and the development of a transfer station, all operating at 75 Boundary Road, Papakura.
